For the 2025 Hajj season, Saudi authorities have announced a sweeping digital upgrade at Masjid al-Haram and other sacred sites, featuring comprehensive 5G networks combined with complimentary WiFi for the expected influx of millions of pilgrims. Additionally, cutting-edge drones powered by artificial intelligence have been deployed to monitor crowd formations and identify potential hazards instantly, helping to improve security, ease the performance of rituals, and provide relief from historically extreme temperatures.
The Kingdom's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah stated that 5G and free WiFi are now available at all main locations including Masjid al-Haram, Arafat, Muzdalifah, and Mina. Over 1,200 wireless access points have been installed since late April 2025 to ensure uninterrupted connectivity, enabling pilgrims to utilize digital guide applications, track prayer schedules, and maintain contact with loved ones worldwide.
“This technology is designed to keep pilgrims connected, deliver accurate information, and enhance their safety while fulfilling the fifth pillar of Islam,” explained Abdelrahman Al Sudais, Head of Religious Affairs at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque. He added that the AI-driven drones, known as "Saqr," oversee crowd movements, detect critical congestion points, and coordinate with ground staff to prevent incidents that could endanger pilgrims.
Technically, these drones are equipped with high-resolution cameras and advanced image-processing algorithms to quantify crowd densities at various locations. When crowd levels near critical thresholds, an automated alert is dispatched to the control center, prompting deployment of personnel to the affected areas. Meanwhile, cybersecurity experts emphasize the importance of robust security protocols for public network usage. "The handling of pilgrims' data must comply with international privacy standards to avoid misuse," stated Dr. Aisha Al-Fawzan of King Saud University.
Furthermore, the gargantuan air conditioning systems installed on Masjid al-Haram’s terraces have been integrated with IoT temperature sensors to automatically maintain a comfortable range of 24–26°C. These sensors connect to the Smart Hajj app, which monitors weather conditions and crowd densities to optimize cooling at precisely the right times. The app also provides pilgrimage route guidance, locations of medical services, and transportation info including Haramain train schedules and increased autonomous shuttle bus operations ahead of the Hajj season.
The introduction of these technologies has elicited mixed reactions. Most pilgrims welcome the free WiFi, which allows them to share spiritual moments live with family abroad. "I can watch the khutbah and pray together with my loved ones even while being at the holy sites," shared Fatimah, a pilgrim from Pakistan. However, concerns have been voiced about potential distractions from technology potentially undermining the spiritual focus of worship. Privacy advocates also highlight risks if location data is collected and processed without explicit consent.
From an economic perspective, these digital infrastructure investments are estimated at over 500 million U.S. dollars as part of Saudi Vision 2030 to bolster religious tourism and support economic diversification. Observers believe the success of Hajj 2025’s technological innovations will serve as a model for managing large-scale religious gatherings facing similar climate and safety challenges, such as India’s Kumbh Mela.
Ultimately, the blend of tradition and technological innovation is expected not only to elevate safety and comfort for pilgrims but also to enhance Saudi Arabia’s reputation as a modern, tech-forward Islamic hub. With millions of worshippers from over 180 countries anticipated, Hajj 2025 could mark a pivotal milestone in the development of contemporary Muslim civilization.
