On Monday, June 23, 2025, the KPK called upon Ustadz Khalid Basalamah to provide expert testimony regarding the suspected corruption in determining the 2024 hajj quota at the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The summons took place at the KPK’s Merah Putih building, located on Jalan Kuningan Persada Kav 4, South Jakarta.
Khalid responded to the summons and underwent questioning for approximately two hours. As an expert witness, he was asked about the mechanisms for managing and distributing the hajj quota, aimed at assisting investigators in completing their inquiry.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo conveyed that Khalid was cooperative and provided the requested information. He emphasized that the hajj quota corruption case is still in the investigation phase with no suspects named as of yet. The anti-corruption agency is open to summoning other parties, including former officials, if necessary.
According to Kompas, calling Ustadz Khalid as an expert witness forms part of the KPK’s efforts to obtain technical and operational insights into the management of special hajj arrangements, which are suspected to involve gratuities. This approach helps the KPK map out the chronology and procedures in determining quota numbers comprehensively.
At the time of reporting, no official comments were issued by Khalid’s legal team or by Khalid himself beyond his cooperative stance during questioning. The public and legal observers have welcomed this step as a normal part of the investigative process, underscoring that expert witness summons do not imply personal wrongdoing but rather serve as a method of evidence gathering.
The KPK remains committed to concluding the investigation into alleged hajj quota corruption and will elevate the case to the prosecution phase if sufficient evidence is found. The evidence-gathering process is expected to continue in the coming days.
